A Short History of Parish

Initial discussions about the possibility of a parish in Peckham, promoted by Mr James Gilbert.

Fr. Louis of Lavagna, on a journey from Toronto, stops in Peckham and becomes interested in founding a mission there.
He meets with Cardinal Wiseman and Mr Gilbert.

Bishop Grant, of Southwark, was in Rome for the definition of the Immaculate Conception.
He met a Capuchin, Fr. Emidius, who asked his permission to set up a house for the Order in London, to which he readily agreed.

Purchase of present site by Fr. Emidius.
First small school opened the following year.

Enough funds raised to begin work on building church.

Church opened by Bishop Grant.

Arrival of Marist Brothers and Sisters, who continued to teach in the school until the Second World War.

School buildings completely rebuilt after being destroyed by fire.
These buildings remained, with some modifications, until the construction of the present buildings in the early 1970s.

Reordering of the Sanctuary, with the screen behind the altar removed and the altar moved back to the east wall.

During the Second World War, the church was bombed on several occasions.
The Guardian of the time, Fr. Eugene, did much work to save the structure -- including climbing 81 ft to repair the church roof!

Celebration of the Centenary of the Parish.
Consecration of the church, after a further reordering of the sanctuary into its present form.

The Franciscans moved to their house in Erith.
Fr. Paul Hendricks became the first secular Parish Priest.

Most Rev. Fr. Paul Hendricks became an assistant Bishop in Southwark.
Rev. Fr. Anthony Plummer took his place.

Friday, 6th July, 2012.
Rev. Alfred Joseph Banya is ordained a Deacon by Archbishop Peter Smith.
Rev. Alfred Joseph Banya takes up his role a the Praish Permanant Deacon.

Rev. Fr Anthony Plummer moved to take up the position of Parish Priest at Christ the King, Wimbledon Park.

Monday, 1st September, 2014
The Vicentians (Congregation of the Mission) take over the guardianship of the parish.
Very Rev. Fr. Richard Diala, CM takes up his role as Parish Priest.
Rev. Fr. Vincent George, CM takes up his role as Assistant Priest.

Monday, 6th June, 2016
Parish inaugurated as the headquarters for the Vincentians Europe-Grenada Missions.
Mission Inauguration performed by Very Rev. Fr. Cyril Nnamdi Mbata, CM.
Very Rev. Fr. Richard Diala, CM dedicated as the Mission Superior
by Most. Rev. Bishop Paul Hendricks.

Saturday, 8th October, 2016
Celebration of Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Parish.
Most Rev. Bishop Patrick Lynch SS CC is the Chief Celebrant.
Most Rev. Bishop Paul Hendricks former parish priest in attendance.
Capuchin Franciscan Friars return to celebrate with the parish.
Vincentian Priests and Priests from around the Archdiocese in attendance.
New Parish Recognition Certificates presented to four members of the parish.
Five parishioners presented with the 'Fideliter Servienti' award of the Archdiocese.

September, 2018
Rev. Fr. Richard Diala, CM moves to new role within the Vincentian Community.

September, 2018
Rev. Fr. Blaise Amadi, CM takes up his role as Parish Priest.

Saturday 1st December, 2018
Rev. Fr. Blaise Amadi, CM is inducted as the new Parish Priest by Most Rev. Patrick Lynch, ss cc.
