Mass Intentions

The custom of requesting a Mass Intention originates from the earliest times of the Church. We ask the priest to offer the Mass for someone for a variety of reasons; for the Repose of the Soul of someone who has died recently, for the Repose of the Soul of someone who has died in the past and whose anniversary of death is approaching. It can also be for someone who is ill, and cannot attend the Mass. For a birthday, or some type of thanksgiving, e.g. Graduatation, forthcoming Marriage, Wedding Anniversary.

The Church considers the Mass as the greatest Prayer of Intercession as it brings to light the perfect offering of Christ to the Father in making present the Paschal Mystery of his Death and Resurrection.

When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions:

To offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church.

To offer the Mass in union with the whole Church and for the good of the whole Church.

To offer the Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of someone who has died.

When requesting a Mass Intention, it is customary to offer a stipend to the priest for offering the Mass.

If you would like to arrange for a Mass Intention, please complete a Mass Intention envelope, which can be obtained from the Narthex, or the Sacristy. One of our Welcomers will be happy to help you.

Fill in the details on the front of the envelope, place your stipend inside the envelope and you can either hand it to a welcomer, the deacon or the priest, or alternatively, you can post it through the Presbytery Door on Friary Road marked for the attention of the Parish Secretary.

Remember to supply a telephone number in case you need to be contacted. Please give as much notice as possible if you want a particular date, as the Mass Intention Diary gets filled up very early.

Please note, while every effort is made to give you the date you have requested, there may be times when this may need to be changed due to some unforseen circumstance, such as for a person who may have died.
